My love for fashion helped me develop a regular meditation practice. Yes, I said fashion!
I’ve taken amazing classes–and lots of them. I’ve studied with some of the best yoga and meditation teachers in the world. I’ve read countless books. I’ve blogged in an attempt to hold myself accountable. I think I ever made a chart at one point. Did any of this help me to develop a consistent and regular yoga practice? Nope! It would work for about a week.. then.. Poof! Something happened (I have no idea what) and I just couldn’t do it anymore. It was my fashion obsession that changed everything for me.
I was in the habit of standing in my closet every morning for a good 10 minutes scratching my head. I have SO many choices, and yet, I would think to myself, “I have NOTHING to wear.. I hate ALL of my clothes.” Often, I’d put one one outfit… decide it’s not the right one and change several times before I actually made it out the door. All of this takes a ridiculous amount of time.
Ironically, even though I spent so much time getting ready in the mornings, I realized I still wear the same outfits over and over again. This is unacceptable for someone who loves clothes as much as I do. Determined to make better use my closet and dresser (both ridiculously full), one Sunday afternoon I decided to find five creative new outfits for the week. I tried everything on. I laid out every outfit–even the jewelry.
The following week, I was astonished by how much time this saved me in the morning. I felt fabulous in my newly-constructed wardrobe and ready for work with 15 minutes to spare.. So I thought, what the heck? I sat down to meditate. That was almost three months ago, and I haven’t missed a day since.
Since I just happened into my meditation practice this time, I had no expectations and no worries. It wasn’t forced–just a happy accident. This means I’ve been able to watch it all unfold organically, without judgment. I really am noticing a difference. I’m calmer, more connected, and yes, better dressed!

Waw! It´s all about prioritize!

@Lisa, That is the ULTIMATE compliment! 🙂 Thank you!
@Yogamamma, You're right.. mostly! But getting to work on time has to be a top priority and it helps if one is clothed when she gets there.. Or so I've heard. 🙂 Thanks for commenting!

Hi! 🙂
I do this every morning, the standing in front of the closet thing. I ought to give your way of sorting out your wardrobe a shot! I like it! I may not use the extra time for meditation but extra time in the morning is ALWAYS welcome! 😀

Hi Sam! Thanks for posting! If you're not using your extra time for meditating.. I hope you use it for more coffee time/reading. Both things I also enjoy thoroughly in the morning. Yoga's a good choice, too! 🙂

I would love to do yoga in the mornings! I think it would be a fantastic way to start the day (provided I can haul myself out of bed early enough). That's ultimately my goal! 🙂

Yay for you on the consistent meditation practice!!! I'm convinced that meditation is one of the most valuable things a human can spend time on. How perfect that it happened simply by grace.
I'm not a fashionista and choosing what to wear takes me no time at all (it's pretty much always yoga clothes, though I admit that if I need to wear something else, I do find myself in the exact conundrum you described!). However, I think I could apply your lesson to other to-dos in the morning. As a mom, I find that the more I have planned, thought out, and talked about ahead of time the smoother and happier our day goes.

Another tip:
Only buy the classics (with one or two trendy outfits thrown in for that season) some looks put themselves together….because of my yoga practice, cardio, and healthy eating habits, I can wear most anything and look fine. That helps too…..I get up at 5:15 am to leave for work at 8:20…..1 hour is for shower hair, makeup, and dressing…the other time is for fitness (yoga (meditation) and/or cardio) healthy breakfast, make a healthy lunch, a load of laundry…stuff like that

Awesome. Who knew?
Now if I could just sit my kid down on Sunday and get her fed, changed and walked for the week maybe I would have a mediation practice too 🙂

I recently started using kitsch hair ties – i know it doesn't seem like a big deal, but having the cute little knotted flat hair tie on my wrist (my says "I am peace" on it) reminds me of the practice i did in the morning and helps me keep balanced throughout the day. I love them 🙂 it's my little fashion splurge http://www.mykitsch.com
