I have a new yoga obsession. Handstand. I can’t stop it. I just kick and kick and kick up every chance I get. I’m not even sure why.
Handstand is not a new pose for me. I’ve been able to kick up at the wall for years. After the first time I tried a Handstand in a yoga class, I didn’t have too much trouble because I remembered doing it when I’m little. I’ve been obsessed with arm balances for ages, but Handstand was kind of ho-hum.. until recently, that is…
What’s different now? I stepped away from the wall and something magical happened… I balanced!
I’m not ready for the middle of the room stuff yet, but I can hop up and stay there for a few seconds before I either fall out of it or end up with my heels against the wall. If this isn’t something you’ve experienced before believe me when I say it’s an AMAZING feeling! The weightlessness! The freedom! The power!
I’m addicted. Seriously, I think I’ve tried (to varying degrees of success) 500 times just today. It’s so exciting because I think once I’ve mastered balancing in Handstand a whole world of new and exciting poses will open up to me.. I’m stoked!
What pose are you obsessed with right now?

Way to go!
I'm all over forearm stands right now, though it's easier (and less dirty for the arms) to do handstands at work (hiding behind containers and baggage carts). It took me about 3 months for headstands, 6 to get forearm stand, and still working on full extended handstand. Inversions are pure gold, especially for the brain!

Ditto here!! I actually decided to do a handstand at the playground today while my daughter was playing with her friend. Her Dad (who is a friend of ours) ran up behind me and tried to scare me outta the pose. You are sooo right… it truly is addicting. I can't help myself either 🙂

I'm sure my hubby's favorite pose is savasana. Haha! Mine currently is the forward bend. I really envy people like you who can do handstand with ease. I have tried without success. Do you have tips on how to do handstand or even shoulderstand? Thanks.

Ah mine is Pincha Mayurasana. Today I kicked up into it for 3 beautiful seconds. Pure Joy!
I have been experimenting taking my feet away from the wall in Handstand for a week or two and its fun but exhilarating.
Loving the blog.

congrats on the handstand! i have not mastered that pose yet, which upsets me because i was a gymnast as a kid. i'll get it back. meanwhile, i'm diligently working toward forearm stand. and not-so-diligently toward a split. we shall see!

I'm obsessed with mudras these days – seeing what my hands have to say. I do love a good inversion though; inversions keep us young and vibrant.
Maybe you'll inspire Penny to do a paw stand 🙂

I'm nowhere near handstand or forearm stand, but I take any opportunity to try and play with eka pada koundinyasana I and II. Not that I'm really there, but it's coming, slowly.
Otherwise I fly in parsva bakasana 😀
(pattern recognition here?)

My handstand and forearm stand obsession has been ongoing for over a year now! Sometimes I take a break for a couple of months — then I get the random urge to hop upside down at the wall and I'm back at it again.

Thank you for posting this. I've wandered away from my mat and this makes me want to pop in an old school VHS of Rodney Yee in "Intermediate Yoga" because it has handstand in it. Might do it tomorrow morning to calm me down before districts.

awesome! right now I am obsessed with headstands and trying to hold crow for longer then 10 seconds!
I'm a new reader of your blog and I love it! I was reading back to your post about being the youngest teacher trainee and getting interesting reactions and I would just like to offer my two cents {i know that post was over a month ago, but i just read it}. I am 17 right now, but I completed my 200 hour teacher certification when I was 16. I started it when I was 15. My mom brought me to yoga classes when I was 10, and I had a love for it that kept on growing. I've never really came across any negative reactions in regards to my age, except for one time. I woman refused to hire me because of my age. Overall though, every student I've ever had and employers have been very supportive of my yoga journey! I can't wait to keep reading your blog 🙂

I'm obsessed with forearm stand. I got into it the first time (finally!) a couple of weeks ago, and now I can get right up. At the wall. Last night I video taped myself a bunch of times so I could see what I look like and begin to tweak the pose.
Then I filmed myself in headstand (an old favorite) and kicking up to someday get into handstand.

Handstand is kind of like my white whale. I've been trying to attain a middle of the room handstand for a while now, but just can't seem to keep my balance for more than 1 or 2 seconds at a time. We have a love-hate relationship, me and handstand. I love that 1-2 second feeling. But I hate not being able to feel it for longer!
Just stumbled across your blog. Can't wait to read more.
